There has been some misconception regarding the recent Gun Legislation press releases that I am taking a liberal stand. As your Sheriff, I assure you that this is not the case.
In regards to Senate Bill 281, Firearm Safety Act of 2013:
As the Sheriff of Garrett County I join the entire national community in mourning the senseless tragedy and loss of innocent lives in places line Newtown, Connecticut. However I , like many other jurisdictions do not believe that the loss of Constitutional Rights, privilege's and protection are something that should be lost or traded in the name of public safety in order to secure a false sense of security. This legislation, if enacted, will not save lives. Although the legislation is well meaning, studies show that with increased gun restrictions of law abiding citizens, crime in some locations actually increases.
I do not believe that the loss of rights extended to citizens both naturally and by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution should be lost, any more than I believe that when senseless accident's and tragedy resulting from the unlawful use of alcohol or prescription drugs occur, that alcohol and prescription purchases and ownership for the general public should be restricted or banned.
I certainly support and endorse legislation which would strengthen public safety by restricting gun ownership from individuals who suffer from certain mental illnesses and with that same enthusiasm support tougher penalties for those who engage in criminal acts committed with firearms.
I believe that the firearm and gun safety discussion is of the utmost importance and that there is meaningful common ground that can provide for TRUE safety to our communities, our families and for my children as well as yours. I believe that real compromise can be found while maintaining the integrity and protections of the United States Constitution provided to all law abiding Americans and I believe that all law abiding citizens have the right to bear arms as declared in the constitution of the United States. That same Constitution that I swore to protect as the Sheriff of Garrett County.
